Delaware Canal State Park: Film Night - The Canallers’ Tales Much of what we know about life on the Delaware Canal comes from interviews with its workers and their families. These canallers are no longer with us, but fortunately, some of their oral histories were collected on paper, recordings, and film. Lance Metz, Historian Emeritus at the National Canal Museum in Easton, and a colleague produced The Boatman’s Horn, a film that features Delaware and Lehigh Navigation canallers describing what their lives were like, the type of work they did, and incidents that happened on the canals. This film, and Famous Tiller Sharks, a similar documentary based on interviews conducted by Jim Lee, who lived at Plane 9 on the Morris Canal in New Jersey, will be shown at 7:30 PM at Stone Hall in the Feinstone Conference Center, The David Library of the American Revolution, 1201 River Road, Washington Crossing, PA 18977. History is a lively subject when it is told by those who’ve lived it. Don’t miss this opportunity to view these seldom seen films (in DVD, we promise). Delaware Canal State Park: Town and Towpath Bike Hike -
The Friends of the Delaware Canal join with the Landmark Towns of Bucks County to sponsor a leisurely 7.5 mile round trip ride from Morrisville to Yardley and back. Meet at 10:00 AM in the parking area along the river dike on North Delmorr Avenue in Morrisville. On the ride, you’ll not only get a taste of what each town has to offer, but you’ll also ride by one of the Delaware Canal’s most special places. Since commerce ended in 1932, the widewaters (where canal boats pulled out from the main flow of traffic) have evolved into an abundant habitat for birds, animals, and plants. Great blue herons, ducks, and red-bellied turtles very much like the neighborhood. Ian Kindle and Sarah Berg, Park Educators, will lead the Bike Hike and share canal and wildlife information. Donna Boone, Landmark Towns of Bucks County coordinator, will be on hand to provide everything you want and need to know about the program and the four participating towns. June 5th is National Trails Day, so come out and enjoy one of the best towpath trails in America.
