There are a lot of places to go for more information about trail maintenance and trail design, not that you will be designing trails, but learning how a properly designed trail functions and learning the nomenclature of trails will assist you when calling attention to problem areas you note while performing your duties as a steward. Here is a list of sites that have videos, and other media that you can use to increase your knowledge.

There are a lot of other sites offering information and videos, it is best to look for sites that are associated with parks, forests, wild areas, etc., as they will have experience both with trails, and with volunteers.

Here is a short list of sites that sell trail maintaining tools. Some of the more common tools can be sourced locally at hardware stores, home improvement stores, or home and garden centers. Specialized trail tools are not as readily available.

For insect protection, repellent are widely available, and many places sell permethrin impregnated clothing, as well as permethrin sprays you can apply yourself. Insect shield sells both, and has an option where you can send in your own clothing and have it treated. The treatment lasts for 70 washings, so basically the life of the garment.
