Healthy Lands Week, Hiking/Walking

The Serpentine Barrens are at their peak in late September! Enjoy a walk through the Goat Hill Wild Plant Sanctuary and view the work being done to restore this globally rare and important ecosystem. Experts will be along to identify some of the rare species and explain their unique adaptations and strategies to survive the conditions on the barrens. William Penn State Forest Manager Stephen Wacker will guide the walk and explain the reasons behind some recent and planned management activities including tree harvesting, clearing, mowing, and prescribed fire.
The walk will involve some steep grades and rough ground so be prepared with sturdy shoes but most of the walk will be fairly level less than 1 mile. Bring water and insect repellant.
Meet at the site via an access road off of Ridge Road. Turn into the gravel lane near 760 Ridge Road (39.718212, -76.092631) Marked with pink and blue ribbons, go through the gate and proceed about 0.3 miles to park in the open grassy area (39.721736, -76.089804).
Please RSVP to Gordon Bosler at [email protected] if you are planning to attend.
