First Day HIke, Hiking/Walking

These popular events are making a return to kick off 2022. Check the DCNR Calendar of Events for the ever-changing list of places to participate (and all the latest details on cancellations or further information). Included there (or perhaps not) are these sponsored by PPFF Chapter Friends.

Friends of Beltzville: Join the Friends of Beltzville and park staff for a hike from the Beltzville State Park Environmental Interpretive Center (EIC) to the tower on top of the dam, culminating in a scenic view of Beltzville Lake. This is a dog friendly hike, and well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome to attend. A 2:00 start, this hike is approximately 3.5 miles in length, so plan accordingly, bring plenty of water, and wear warm layers and comfortable footwear. This easy hike has durable gravel, grass, and dirt surfaces. For last minute changes/cancellations due to weather or other circumstances, please check our Facebook page, or the Friends of Beltzville Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/beltzvillestateparkfriends/

Friends of Cook Forest: Begins at 1:00 at the Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom for a nearly 3 mile loop encompassing Ridge, Camp, Corduroy, and Liggett Trails. Walk through some of the finest old growth hemlock forest in the northeast as the hike circles Ridge Camp, returning along Tom’s Run. Please be prepared for the weather. If trail conditions are a concern there may be an alternate route instead. Well behaved pets are welcome.

Friends of Cowans Gap: Several hikes (beginning at 1:00 and 2:00) in varying degrees of difficulty help get your heart pumping for the new year.

Friends of Pine Grove Furnace: Meet at 1:00 PM at the Fuller Lake Bathhouse (1050 Pine Grove Road, Gardners, PA 17324 GPS: 40.03134, -77.29975). The route includes tripping hazards, large stepping stones, and uneven terrain, so baby strollers are not appropriate for the full hike (a shorter walk on the park’s flat and smooth Hiker-Biker pathway will also be offered). The Friends group will serve light refreshments. Please dress for the weather, bring water, and wear sturdy shoes. For more information, contact the park office at (717) 486-7174.

Friends of Ridley Creek: Begins promptly at 10 am at the parking lot by the Stables, behind Pavilion #8. Dogs are allowed on leash at all times. There is a limit of 20 participants. Please register by email to [email protected] to secure a spot. Plan on 1 ½ to 2 hours to complete the hike with hot chocolate, coffee, and light refreshments at the trailhead after the hike. Gary Sawyer, the Friends Co-Chair for Trail Maintenance, will lead the hike.

Friends of Trough Creek & Warriors Path: Two hikes on offer at Trough Creek beginning at 11:00. Meet at the park office. The main hike will be from Ledges Trail to Abbott’s Trail to Balanced Rock to Old Forge to the park office. The smaller hike will will be along the Cemetery Trail and loop back through the CCC area.
