PENNSYLVANIA PARKS AND FORESTS FOUNDATION RECEIVES GRANT FROM REI FOR REHAB OF FIREBOXES AND CHIMNEYS
Camp Hill, PA –The Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF), received a grant from Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), Pittsburgh, to be used to rehab deteriorating fireboxes and chimneys in the Adirondack style shelters along the Laurel Highland Hiking Trail.
The Laurel Highland Hiking Trail, called “one of the Keystone state’s marquee paths” by Backpacker magazine, with its dense hardwood canopy, clean, wildflower-lined creeks and postcard worthy ridgetop views, provide a unique backpacking and camping experience. “The overnight experience on Laurel Ridge along the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail immerses you in nature. The Adirondack Shelters, highlighted by the stone chimneys and fireboxes, provide critical warmth and undeniable ambiance,” says Mike Mumau, Park Manager at Laurel Hill State Park Complex. “Investing in these recreational resources is an important step in preserving this experience for many generations to come. We sincerely thank REI for their generous grant award. Their commitment to recreation and conservation is very appreciated,” says Mike.
The project is scheduled to begin this summer, with additional support from the Friends of Laurel Hill plan to contribute to the project as well.
“The investment by REI Pittsburgh into this trail is very much appreciated,” said Marci Mowery, President of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation. “This trail provides hours of recreation for users throughout the year. We appreciate REI’s support.”
