Opportunities to Pause & Reflect

At each time stamp listed below, answer the provided questions. You can download or print a discussion guide for these prompts here, or by visiting the lesson materials tab.

Pause at 10:30

  • What does your group do to facilitate the social aspects of service?
    • Examples: planning a picnic at the park once per quarter? Can some of your meetings be walking meetings?
  • What could you do?

Pause at 15:50

  • What do you do to ensure that everyone is heard, especially when there are conflicts and disagreements?
    • Idea is to bring disagreements to the surface
    • Set ground rules – everyone will get a chance to talk because everyone’s thoughts are important
    • ”Vegas rules” – what happens here stays here
    • Safe space to say what is on your mind – “what are the real issues?”
    • Set aside enough time to really talk things through
    • Resist the urge to close discussion too soon
    • May have to encourage those who are reluctant – “You have some good ideas on this issue …”; allow space
  • How does your group work to develop trust and appreciation of differences?
  • What do you do to encourage and surface conflicts to avoid side discussions?
  • What could you do?
