Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The steward should always be prepared to do the job safely and to have the essential protective gear to ensure their safety. This list includes gloves, eye protection, hearing protection when necessary, clothing that protects them from common hazards when doing trail reporting and maintenance. Footwear should be sturdy and well suited for walking, and if using digging tools, leather would be preferred. A first aid kit should be carried by at least one person on any outing. There are many commercially available first kits.

A good basic first aid kit will include; antiseptic wipes, antibacterial ointment, bandage adhesive, assorted adhesive bandages, butterfly closures, gauze pads of various sizes, non-stick sterile pads, medical adhesive tape, blister treatment, pain reliever, anti-sting/anti-itch medication, antihistamine, fine point tweezers, safety pins, first aid manual.
