Education, Hiking/Walking

Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy an interpretive hike at the Goat Hill Serpentine Barrens on May 6th, 2023.
Hikers will meet in the parking lot at 270 Red Pump Road, Nottingham, PA 19362 at 9:00 AM, and follow the powerline cut and the Rose Trail through an old mining area and return via the powerline cut. The hike will end around noon. For those interested, the Friends will demonstrate the use of tree pullers for a future workday aimed at removing pitch pine from some of the scraped areas on the barrens.
The moss-pink (phlox) and early saxifrage are going out of bloom, but hikers should be able to see lyre-leaved rock-cress, azure bluets, arrow-leaved violet and barrens chickweed in flower, all specialists of rocky areas. The Michaux’s stitchwort is just starting to open.
You may also be able to see early butterflies such as pearl crescents, commas, question marks, and some of the duskywings. Feel free to bring binoculars and add bird observations as well!
Please RSVP to mailto:[email protected] and let the Friends know if you will be attending.
Remember to take suitable precautions against ticks (DEET, permethrin-treated clothing, tucking in pant legs and wearing light-colored clothing) and check yourselves for ticks after the hike.
