Work has begun on improvements to Sam Lewis State Park.

October 10, 2019

A no longer used concession stand is getting a new life by being repurposed into an Environmental Education Center. The finished building will provide a space for demonstrations, discussions and learning, with protection from the elements when needed.
Exposing children to the outdoors through environmental education opens their vision of the world. They use all their senses and learn using math, language arts, as well as science. Providing environmental education is an investment in future conservationists.
Improvements to the building include putting up walls, electric outlets and lighting installed, and a fresh coat of paint on the inside and out. The work will be done by park staff and students from nearby Eastern York High School. The students will learn basics like surface prep and painting, while getting exposure to other skills. The project gives the high schoolers hands on training, a chance to practice what they have learned in class, as well as observing potential careers.
The project at Sam Lewis State Park is being funded by the generous donations made during the silent auction held at PPRR’s Annual Awards Banquet. Additional funds are needed to complete the project. You can make a donation here: Help with Education Center at Sam Lewis
